Nine tomatoes varieties were entered in a tomato-tasting contest held Aug. 25 at the Berkeley County Extension Office by the Berkeley-Jefferson Extension Master Gardener Association.
The 2020 contest was limited to Berkeley-Jefferson WVU Extension Master Gardeners, interns and students currently enrolled in the Berkeley-Jefferson Master Gardener Training Course.
Contestants delivered their home-grown tomatoes to the office. Karin Kozlowski, family nutrition outreach instructor, prepared the tomatoes for sampling and made fresh salsa with the leftovers. Extension and county staffers sat on the judging panel.
The 2020 winners are:
• First place, Black Ethiopian Tomato, entered by Rick Lowman.
• Second place, Sun Gold Cherry Tomato, entered by Joyce and Art Robison.
• Third place, Green Zebra Tomato, entered by Melanie Files.
All the winners are Certified WVU Extension Master Gardeners. They received gift cards to a local nursery and certificates for bragging rights.
