LA CROSSE, WI- The first time at State was a memorable one for Menominee Indian Senior Guadalupe Corn. Two of her best throws of the season put her in the State Finals and onto the podium with a third place finish.

Corn reached a season long goal of throwing 40 feet for the first time this season

“It had to be done,” Corn said.

The first good throw of the day came in the preliminaries on her third throw. After throws of 36-6 and 36-10, Corn tossed a record breaker.

The throw of 39-11.50 topped her season best 39-3 which she threw in Sectionals last week.

“We have been shooting for 40 feet all season, and when that one landed just short, we all looked at each other and said, you have got to be kidding me,” said Menominee Indian Coach Chris Clache.

With two throws remaining in her high school career, Corn set her sights on 40.

“Once it left my hand, I knew it was going to be a good one,” Corn said.

“I was standing right where it landed and I knew it was going to be close,” Clache explained. “It was a relief more than anything, and it was that magic number that we were trying to hit.”

The announcement of 40-0.00 was just part of the excitement, it also put Corn in contention to be top three.

“I kind of expected to podium, but I did not know if I was going to do that good, so it was kind of nice.”

That throw gave her a personal record and a bronze medal.

“She had a couple of big throws to put her in position to do what she did,” Clache said.

Corn was the only state qualifier this year for Menominee Indian, so  she got complete attention from her coaching staff and fans.

Corn brining home 3rd Place continues a tradition of successful throwers at Menominee Indian. In 2019, Darius Wayka finished 3rd on the boys side. Ania Smith was 3rd in the Shot and the Discus in 2016.

“It is quality, not quantity. Maybe someday we will get a busload down there, but we are happy to get whoever we can down there.”
