"Indian grape prices fall, despite lower supply" - FreshPlaza.com

The first Indian grapes arrived at LuBaFresh three and a half weeks ago. After a great start with high prices, prices have shown a downward trend in the last week. "This is mainly caused by the lower quality grapes from Chile, Peru and South Africa, which are pulling the price of Indian grapes down. Given the reactions from the market today, it seems that the lowest point has been reached," says Lucien de Wit.

"The quality supplied from India is excellent. In addition, the supply is also considerably lower. The latest statistics show that India has exported 4,681 containers to date. That was 6,842 containers last year. At the same time, we see that the logistics costs have increased enormously. We pay almost 50 percent more for a container. In that sense it is actually inexplicable that the prices are so low," says the importer.

"The advantage is that the grapes are all sold. Last year we had a dramatic India season due to the lockdown. Now the prices are low, but the sales are still there. I also hear reports from India that many growers are already closing the season in week 14, which means that we are expected to receive the last arrivals in the second week of May. It is therefore possible that there is a gap between the Indian and Egyptian season, but this period is still a while away and a lot can still happen."

LuBaFresh mainly sells white seedless grapes from India of the Thompson and Sonaka varieties. "We sell these in trays, 4.5 kilos loose, as well as in the mix. Most of the Indian grape cultivation also consists of white grapes. The volume of colored grapes from India is almost negligible."
