Alvia Lewis Frey: $110 for 64-ounce box of Grape-Nuts? - pharostribune.com

If you have not heard, Grape-Nuts, a breakfast staple for more than 100 years, are in short supply.

I kid you not.

The cereal, which, by the way, has neither grapes nor nuts in the ingredients, was created by C.W. Post in 1897.

This news comes directly from Post Consumer Brands.

During a pandemic, I understand the disappearance of toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, disinfectant spray, and hand sanitizer, but Grape-Nuts?

What gives?

My husband likes Grape-Nuts.

I do not. I ate many bowls of Grape-Nuts for breakfast with Dan when we were first married, but alas.

I find them to be an odd batch of wee nuggets offering a less than desirable taste. To each his own, as my mother always said.

According to Kristen DeRock, Grape-Nuts brand manager, the increased consumption of Grape-Nuts over the past year has succumbed to an unfortunate supply-and-demand problem.

“People may continue to see shortages and temporary out-of-stocks of Grape-Nuts as we continue to work through supply constraints and higher cereal demand amid the pandemic,” DeRock told USA Today.

The New York Times even covered that alarming state of affairs.

“Some hungry customers, foiled in grocery stores, tried the internet to search for the product,” wrote NYT reporter Johnny Diaz, “only to find that prices could be far above normal.”

I’ll say! The online marketplace offered prices as high as $110 for a 64-ounce box.

Again, I kid you not.

Did people actually pay $110 for a 64-ounce box of Grape-Nuts?

If you are a fan of Grape-Nuts, however, do not fret.

According to DeRock, the cereal will be back on grocery shelves in mid-March.

That, my friends, is just a few weeks away.

Oh, happy day.
