The production of grapes has been gaining ground in Colombia in recent years, as confirmed by the latest data recorded by the Colombian Horticultural Association (Asohofrucol) on the surface of this fruit. In 2015 the country had 2,697 hectares of grapes, a figure that increased to 3,072 hectares in 2019.
Currently, the main grape-producing regions in the country are Valle del Cauca, which produced 19,513 tons of grapes in 2019, accounting for 70% of the country's production, and Huila, with 7,560 tons and a 27% share. They are followed by the departments of Cauca, with 300 tons; Santander, with 241 tons; Amazonas, with 211 tons; Antioquia, with 96 tons; Boyaca, with 90 tons, and Meta, with 12 tons.
According to Asohofrucol, Colombia produced more than 28,000 tons of grapes in 2019.
International competition
There are multiple players in the world grape market. China, the United States, Italy, Chile, France, and Spain are the most outstanding, as they account for almost 50% of the global share. According to recent data, the world produced more than 70 million tons of grapes in 2018.
However, Colombia continues to grow and consolidate its presence. According to ProColombia, between January and November 2019, the country exported $ 25,855 in fresh grapes. In the same period last year exports reached $ 201,564, showing remarkable growth. The main destinations were the Netherlands, Curaçao, and Aruba.
