Every year, the president of the United States participates in the strange tradition of pardoning a turkey ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. This year, President Donald Trump pardoned a turkey named Corn after it beat out another turkey named Cob for the honor in a Twitter poll.

"Which turkey should President Trump pardon at this year's National Thanksgiving Turkey Pardoning Ceremony—Corn or Cob?" The official White House Twitter account posted earlier this week, with 53.7 percent of voters choosing Corn.
In follow-up tweets, the account posted a list of quick facts about each fowl, with Corn weighing in at 42 pounds and a height of 32 inches. It even said that Corn's favorite sport is college football and that the turkey has hopes of visiting the Iowa state fair one day. Appropriately, Corn's favorite food also happens to be...sweet corn.

Although this year has been anything but traditional, it's good to see that some things—no matter how silly—are still business as usual. According to NPR, the National Turkey Federation has been giving presidents turkeys since 1947. As part of the process, the turkeys are brought in to Washington, D.C. and they stay in luxurious hotel rooms ahead of the official pardoning ceremony by the president. When a turkey is pardoned, they are sent to Gobblers Rest at Virginia Tech's Department of Animal and Poultry Science, and so goes the story with this odd annual tradition. 'Til next year!
