Fear of Smoke Taint Has Wineries Ditching Their Grape Orders

The wildfire smoke is lingering within the Willamette Valley — not literally, but financially. Because wildfire smoke hit the pinot noir grapes right before and during harvest, some of the wineries that had contracted grapes decided to turn them away, afraid of the potential smoke taint. That’s a big financial loss for those wine growers, especially those that don’t have wineries onsite to make their own wines; the same is true for those wineries, who either won’t be able to make enough pinot noir to be profitable, or may risk their reputation by putting out a subpar product. Some wineries are going ahead and making wine anyway; only time will tell how those bottles turn out. [PBJ]

Bar King Starts Serving Lunch Today With a Menu of Ramen

Now that Bar King and its buzzy bakery have opened, chef Shaun King is switching things up: The main restaurant is introducing a lunch menu that involves several noodle soups. King smokes bacon or chicken backs for the tare onsite, adding things like chicken feet and schmaltz to add body to the stock. Each bowl comes with eclectic toppings like smoked short ribs, horseradish, and crispy chickpeas, with add-ons like burrata. The restaurant will stick to dine-in and pickup during the day, switching to pickup and delivery only in the evenings. [EaterWire]
