A horror movie that earned international attention for completing its shoot amid the pandemic will soon see the light of day, with Sarasota area audiences having the chance to see it first.

“Children of the Corn,” a new adaptation of renowned author and Casey Key resident Stephen King’s short story, is set to debut Friday at Burns Court Cinemas and CMX CinéBistro Siesta Key, which recently announced its reopening. Written and directed by “Equilibrium” filmmaker Kurt Wimmer, the movie isn’t a remake of the 1984 film but rather a reimagining of the material, centering on a rampage waged against the adults of a small Nebraska town by their children.

Producer Lucas Foster, who oversaw the shoot in New South Wales, Australia, andwho has previously worked on movies such as last year’s Oscar-winning “Ford v Ferrari,” said they always wanted to release the movie in time for Halloween. But with theaters in major markets like New York City and Los Angeles still closed, they decided to debut in Florida, where theaters have been allowed to open since June.

Screenings will start in Sarasota County, where one of the film’s executive producers, Keri Nakamoto, lives in Osprey, with plans to expand to Tampa. If the strategy proves successful, Foster said the film could then expand farther to Georgia and neighboring states.

“It’s a little challenging to release a movie right now, being candid,” Foster said. “But we think the movie’s really good, and we think people will come out if we can get the message out. So we’re kind of trying it out on a regional basis on a number of screens, and seeing if we can convince people that we can make it safe.”

The “Children of the Corn” screenings will be “four-walled,” a term referring to a distributor renting a theater, so they can oversee the safety protocols. Foster said customers will be required to wear masks when not eating/drinking, temperatures will be checked and theaters will be disinfected between screenings.

Outlets including The New York Times and The Washington Post covered the “Children of the Corn” shoot as an early example of how film production could take place during coronavirus. The movie was prepping for filming in March when the pandemic struck.

The production decided to proceed with filming, isolating its cast and crew and implementing numerous safety protocols such as temperature checks and health questionnaires. The shoot wrapped at the end of May, with no one getting sick, Foster said.

Should audiences not turn out, Foster said they’ll pause and consider other release options. Yet he thinks the regional theatrical rollout, starting in Sarasota, is the right step for now.

“We had a lot of extra time to consider how we were going to handle releasing the film, because I’ve literally been thinking about it for months and months and months, with a lot of help from other people,” Foster said. “We’re kind of releasing the movie the same way we made the movie, which is thoughtfully, and with a lot of care about people’s health and welfare and well-being.”
