While cultivating grapes at home, rooted saplings or stem cuttings should be planted. September and October are the ideal months for cultivating grapes.

First, choose a place where sunlight is available aplenty. Make holes that have a depth and width of 75 centimetres. Fill it with red soil, sand and cow dung powder in 2:1:1 ratio.

Then plant the rooted healthy saplings. Choose stems that are 8-10 millimetre thick and about 25 centimetres long for planting. Rooted vines are available in nurseries.

Saplings produced from seeds take more time to grow and bear fruits. Also they rarely have similar qualities of the mother plant. But, vines begin blooming 1.5 years after planting.

Before planting the vines, apply 20 kilograms of cow dung powder and 500 grams of Rajphos and potash as base fertilizer. Adding one kilogram neem cake will help improve immunity.

When grape vines grow, keep only a healthy vine and remove others. Once the grape vines spread on the trellis, prune the vines from time to time.

Gradually, the vines will grow all over the trellis. If new saplings are planted at the corners of the trellis, the garden will flourish within two months.

As the plant starts blooming, cut its smaller branches. Timely pruning and use of fertilizers are the best way to ensure better yield. Grapes can be cultivated using only organic fertilizers.
