Corn and soybean harvest continues going well in South Dakota but soil in many areas could use rain - Drgnews

For the week ending October 4, 2020, there were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 17% very short, 48% short, 35% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 15% very short, 43% short, 42% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Corn condition rated 2% very poor, 4% poor, 20% fair, 64% good, and 10% excellent. Corn mature was 91%, well ahead of 34% last year and 69% for the five-year average. Harvested was 20%, ahead of 1% last year and 9% average.

Soybean condition rated 3% very poor, 6% poor, 22% fair, 60% good, and 9% excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves was 96%, well ahead of 72% last year, and ahead of 90% average. Harvested was 60%, well ahead of 4% last year and 27% average.

Winter wheat planted was 70%, near 72% both last year and average. Emerged was 38%, near 39% last year and 35% average.

Sorghum condition rated 0% very poor, 4% poor, 38% fair, 55% good, and 3% excellent. Sorghum mature was 91%, well ahead of 35% last year and 53% average. Harvested was 33%, well ahead of 4% last year and 13% average.

Sunflowers harvested was 6%, near 3% average.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions rated 10% very poor, 27% poor, 42% fair, 20% good, and 1% excellent.
