Estimates for corn production are in for SW Michigan
LANSING — Some seed corn has been harvested as farmers get ready to take in crops for 2020.
Michigan State University Extension Field Crops Education Eric Anderson said this week the Sept. 1 crop forecast from USDA estimated corn yields at 162 bushels per acre for Michigan. That is down 6 bushels from the Aug. 1 estimate due to the dry conditions in the state last month.
The southern third of St. Joseph, Branch, and Hillsdale counties are consider a moderate drought area with the rest of the county areas "abnormally dry."
Anderson also noted each year, the corn marketing program of Michigan conducts sampling throughout the southern Lower Peninsula to estimate the yield potential of corn for the season.
In normal years, these results are typically revealed in the live "Between the Rows" events. Because of COVID-19, the events had to be conducted virtually in webinars run earlier this month.
Maps provided showed Hillsdale and Lenawee counties would produce more than 200 bushels and acre this season.
The sampling results for Branch and St. Joseph counties showed results of between 175 and 200 bushels and acre.
Anderson noted, "These of course are estimates based on a certain number of fields in these counties, but it will be interesting to see how this year stacks up to previous years."
In the border counties, only Cass County showed under 175 bushels per acre probable harvest for corn.
Cash prices have been around $3.02 to $3.08 per bushel this fall, the lowest since 2007. That’s when federal policy changed to put about 40 percent of the corn production into ethanol added to gasoline.
