Kenyatta E. Austin, convicted but not yet sentenced for killing a woman and her toddler grandson in 2018 on Grape Street in Buffalo, was sentenced Monday to three years in prison for possessing an assault rifle in Niagara Falls.

Austin, 27, was sentenced by Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon on a reduced charge of attempted second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for having the loaded Norinco SKS rifle in his home on 27th Street in the Falls.

Police found the rifle in Austin's home July 3, 2018, the day after Yvette Johnson, 54, and Kyrie Johnson, 17 months old, were shot dead in front of the woman’s Grape Street home. Yvette's brother, Darren Works, who was holding the toddler, and Kyrie's father, Devery Johnson, were wounded.

Austin was convicted of those crimes Feb. 18. He has not yet been sentenced because he is under indictment for the killing of Luis Flores, 24, on East Ferry Street on March 19, 2017.
