Assumption Church group sells out of pies | Local News - The Star Beacon

In past years, Assumption Church has baked 1,000 pies to be sold during the Grape Jamboree.

With the Jamboree canceled this year, the church decided to bake 145 pies and offer them for pre-sale, with the hope of having a few left over to sell this weekend, said Beth Cybulski, the pie making chair for Assumption Church. The pies sold out, she said.

“I wasn’t sure what kind of reception we were going to get by doing just the pre-orders only,” Cybulski said. “In retrospect, [we] possibly could’ve planned to make a few more and sell them out at the curb or something.” Cybulski was afraid of having an overabundance of pies to store, she said.

Making grape pies is a very labor intensive process, Cybulski said. A number of local growers donate grapes for the pies to the church, she said.

Grapes need to be pulled from the vine, then the inside of the grapes are squeezed out and separated from the skins, Cybulski said. The inside of the grapes are then cooked down and strained to separate the seeds out. The leftover from that cooking process is combined with the grape skins and cooked into the pies, she said.

Cooking the church’s usual 1,000 pies takes a full week, Cybulski said.

Some older parishioners who have helped make the pies in the past did not participate this year due to COVID-19, Cybulski said.

The group also decided to make grape syrup and jelly, which the church has never done before, Cybulski said.

“So we did end up making about 55 jugs of grape syrup, which I think is all sold, we may have a few left,” she said. “And then we made grape jelly, and we made 155 jars of jelly, and we do have probably 70 left.”

If anyone would like to purchase the church’s grape jelly, they should call the church’s office, at 440-466-3427.

“We’re just hoping and keeping our fingers crossed that the Grape Jamboree is back next year,” Cybulski said. “We don’t only miss out on the revenue, but ... we see the same people year after year coming up to buy a pie, and those are the faces that we’ll miss this year.”
