Fresh corn on the cob hits local farm stands - MassLive.com

Chicopee- Sweetness and Trinity are the buzzwords lately at McKinstry’s Market Garden in Chicopee. Those are the two early varieties of sweet corn that are now being picked and offered for sale at the Montgomery Street farm stand.

“This has been a tough start to the season,” said Willard “Bill” McKinstry, now the patriarch of the family farm. He explained that cooler temperatures in April have hindered the growth of the earliest varieties. “You’ll have rows of Trinity where some plants have grown and some haven’t right next to each other.”

McKinstry’s Market Garden started selling their corn on July 3, just in time for the holiday weekend. The retail corn bin was well stocked on Monday afternoon.

The McKinstrys have planted about 150 acres of sweet corn in their fields in Chicopee, Granby and Hadley.

During the week, four farmhands pick about 80 crates of corn per day. A crate holds five-dozen ears of corn. An extra picker is added on the weekends.

Bill McKinstry is planning on about three more weeks of uneven growth of the early varieties before things get back to normal and the later varieties mature.

Currently, ears are selling for 67 cents, a bargain if compared to the $1.25/ear McKinstry has seen in the Hartford area.
