"It looks like 2021 will be an exceptional year for early grapes. We trust that it can bring us back to the splendor of 2018, one of the best seasons in recent years," said Gianni Raniolo, president of the Consortium for the Protection of Mazzarrone PGI Grapes.

The enthusiasm is fueled by the early first harvest, which took place around 12 May 2021, and for its good quality and the strong desire to return to what was considered normal before the coronavirus crisis.
"This year's exceptional earliness has allowed an extended production, which is a significant advantage. Due to the increase of Egyptian grapes and the slowdown of the Apulian, Sicilian grapes are in a commercially strong position this year, which we have not seen in years. This trend is also boosting seedless grapes, which are highly requested from all around the world this year."
"The trend for both our white grapes, of the Victoria variety, and our black grapes, of the Black Magic variety, is excellent. So far, traders have mainly had contacts with trusted buyers in the specialty sector, while negotiations with retailers will begin later."
Meanwhile, the cultivation of the Italia grape, the queen of Italian grapes, looks impeccable. "The Italia grape represents our strength and identity. We are confident that the season will also produce the hoped-for results in the medium term, also because the quality prerequisites are in place."
"Although early grapes have always had an intercontinental market, the Italia variety is mainly appreciated in France and Italy itself. Nevertheless, we have noticed that consumers in Eastern Europe, especially in Poland, have started to appreciate more in recent years the typical and inimitable taste of the ripe Italia grape," concluded Raniolo.
