MISHAWAKA — The woman police say is responsible for causing a three-car crash at the intersection of Grape and Cleveland roads on Tuesday now faces criminal charges.
Kristen Kerr, 29, is charged with operating while intoxicated, fleeing law enforcement and unlawful possession of a syringe after investigators say she fled when officers tried to pull her over near the University Park Mall.
Court documents say a Mishawaka police officer saw Kerr's car on University Park Drive while on patrol and attempted to pull her over as she was wanted on a felony warrant. The officer turned on his lights when Kerr turned onto Grape Road, but she kept driving and weaved her way into the intersection at Grape and Cleveland going approximately 40 miles per hour.
Kerr then hit an SVU going west on Cleveland and the resulting collision caused the SVU to collide with a red Mazda in the left-hand turn lane on the other side of the intersection, according to the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team. According to scanner traffic, the pursuit lasted less than a minute.
Officers apprehended Kerr as she climbed out of the rear window of her car and took her to the hospital for a broken nose and a laceration to her head, court documents said. The other drivers in the crash had minor injuries.
