MISHAWAKA — A car fleeing from Mishawaka police caused a multi-car crash at Cleveland and Grape roads Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 1:45 p.m. and involved at least three vehicles, according to the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team, one of which was being pursued by Mishawaka officers.

According to scanner traffic, a Mishawaka officer called in a pursuit of a gold Buick at 1:44 p.m. going north on Grape Road from University Drive. The driver of the vehicle was wanted on a felony drug warrant, according to FACT commander Tim Spencer.

Less than a minute later, the officer reported the crash at Grape and Cleveland to dispatch.

Spencer said the Buick drove around stopped traffic and drove into the intersection at Cleveland Road, where it hit a black SUV traveling west on Cleveland. The resulting collision caused the SUV to hit a red Mazda.

The female driver of the gold Buick was taken to Memorial Hospital with a facial injury and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to Spencer. The drivers of the other two cars reported minor injuries but refused treatment.

Parts of Grape Road near the intersection were still closed late Tuesday afternoon as FACT investigators worked the scene.
