STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Cereal-lovers rejoice!
Grape-Nuts, a longtime staple of grocery store cereal aisles, has returned to shelves across the country following a prolonged shortage.
On Wednesday, Post announced that Grape-Nuts is now back to shipping at full capacity to retailers across the country, meaning fans of the misleadingly-named cereal -- that contains neither grapes nor nuts -- should have no problem picking up a box.
In January, the cereal began disappearing from supermarket shelves with no restocks in sight as the company struggled to keep up with supply amid growing demand in the cereal market during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
While cereal sales had been on a slow, steady decline from 2015 to 2019, the market grew nearly 20% from 2019 to 2020, with the pandemic confining people to their home and prompting many to seek out familiar comfort foods that remind them of less hectic times, according to CNN.
During the shortage, some Grape-Nuts fans were so desperate to get their hands on a box of their favorite cereal that they paid exorbitant prices for the cereal on secondary marketplaces, with resale prices reaching over $100 per box.
“It became abundantly clear during the shortage that Grape-Nuts fans are ‘Nuts for Grape-Nuts,’” said Kristin DeRock, Grape-Nuts brand manager at Post Consumer Brands. “So much so that some of our loyal super fans were willing to pay extreme prices just to ensure they wouldn’t be without their favorite crunchy cereal.”
To make up for the unforeseen shortage, Grape-Nuts is now offering to reimburse any customers who purchased the cereal at higher price points on secondary markets.
Anyone who paid over $10 for a box of Grape-Nuts cereal between Nov. 1, 2020, and March 15, 2021, may submit a valid receipt online and receive a reimbursement of up to $115 to cover the difference between the inflated price paid and the cereal’s suggested retail price.
Customers can submit their reimbursement requests online up until April 15.
“As a way to show our appreciation and thank these fans for their dedication, we want to repay the love by reimbursing them,” DeRock said.
