Western Canadian Prairie producers looking to grow corn in 2021 have a long list of new options to consider. Croplan, Bayer, DLF Pickseed, Horizon Seeds, Proven Seed, Pride Seeds and Thunder Seed are all rolling out new corn hybrids this year, for a total of 30 new options. Suiting a range of crop heat units (CHU) and growing conditions, some of these options may prove a good fit for your business needs. Please note, the following list includes only brand new variety releases for 2021.
Croplan
CP1440VT2P/RIB (2100 CHU) offers great emergence and is a nice-looking hybrid for its maturity class. Additionally, it features a good test weight and drydown, and has great potential for a grain hybrid or early silage. This hybrid has a 77-day maturity rating.

DKC-24-05 (2100 CHU) is a corn hybrid equipped with Roundup Ready 2 technology and has a 74-day relative maturity. This versatile hybrid has excellent test weight and stalk strength. While it has late flowering at maturity, this hybrid dries down very quickly.
DKC-24-06RIB (2100 CHU) is a VT DoublePRO RIB Complete corn hybrid with a 74-day relative maturity. It has excellent stalk strength and excellent test weight during harvest. It also has very good drought tolerance and root strength. Plant at medium to high populations for best results.
DKC-31-85RIB (2425 CHU) is a VT DoublePRO RIB Complete corn hybrid with an 81-day relative maturity. This hybrid is designated as a Silage Ready hybrid offering outstanding silage yield and quality. This hybrid provides excellent stay-green and very good root and stalk strength. It also dries down quickly and has a great harvest appearance. Plant at medium to high populations for best results.
DKC-33-37RIB (2500 CHU) is a VT DoublePRO RIB Complete corn hybrid with an 83-day relative maturity and excellent drought tolerance. It has excellent yield potential with very good root and stalk strength.
DKC-35-37RIB (2575 CHU) is a VT DoublePRO RIB Complete corn hybrid. It has an 85-day relative maturity and is equipped with excellent seedling vigour and a good disease tolerance package offering high-end yield potential. This hybrid has excellent emergence and very good root and stalk strength.
DLF Pickseed
PS 2142RR (2100 CHU) is an ultra-early flowering and maturing hybrid with Roundup Ready Corn 2 technology. PS 2142RR is medium-short statured with an excellent stalk and good root strength that features an excellent late-season look and stay-green. This hybrid has a 75-day relative maturity.
Horizon Seeds
HZ 1267 (2150 CHU) is a sister hybrid to HZ 1265 with corn borer protection. This hybrid offers excellent seedling vigour with quick canopy cover. It performs best in early-season grain corn zones. Relative maturity is 72 days.
HZ 1710 (2250-2350 CHU) is a silage-specific hybrid with strong overall feed values. This hybrid offers excellent canopy cover with a wide harvest window. Relative maturity is 75-78 days.
HZ 3020 (2600-2725 CHU) is a dual-purpose hybrid with above-average test weight. This hybrid offers great drought tolerance and high tonnage potential. Relative maturity is 87-91 days.
Northstar Genetics
178 (2175 CHU) is a Roundup Ready 2 grain hybrid for early-season maturity zones. Strong emergence and excellent seedling vigour allow for a fast, early-season start. This hybrid offers excellent grain quality and an early flower with rapid drydown.
183 (name pending registration) (2250 CHU) is a VT2PRIB grain hybrid for mid-season maturity zones. The hybrid features strong seedling vigour and emergence, very strong roots, and a determinate girthy ear with 16-18 round kernel rows. As well, this hybrid offers excellent grain quality, a mid-flowering date and great drydown. The medium plant height makes for excellent residue management.
255 (2325 CHU) is a VT2PRIB hybrid is a high-yielding hybrid with outstanding late season intactness, great drydown and full season plant health. Featuring a determinate ear, 255 offers aggressive spring vigour and resilience in tough conditions.
191 (2350 CHU) is a VT2PRIB dual-purpose hybrid for grain or silage usage. It has strong yield performance potential with rapid drydown. Its very good seedling vigour makes it a good choice for early planting. An attractive grain hybrid with sizable ears, this hybrid offers good Goss’s wilt resistance. Strong late season plant intactness makes this hybrid suitable for grazing applications.
913S (2100-2200 silage CHU, 50 per cent milkline) is a high-yielding, Roundup Ready 2 choice for silage feed and grazing. 913S is a very tall plant with consistent ears that produce floury kernels on a white cob. PV 62384RIB (2500 CHU) is a VT Double PRO corn hybrid that has excellent silage suitability with good stress tolerance. Featuring strong yield (107 per cent of P8387AM), this medium-tall hybrid offers very good root and stalk strength and very good test weight as well as excellent plant health and stay-green. PV 62384RIB suits silage acres in the mid-full season growing zone. This hybrid has an 84-day relative maturity.
PV 62485RIB (2550 CHU) brings strong defensive protection to the full-season silage market in Western Canada. This hybrid has very solid agronomics, including a very good rating for seedling vigour and root and stalk strength. It also features very good stay-green and high silage quality. Good ear flex allows for planting at lower densities. This hybrid has an 85-day relative maturity.
Pride Seeds
A5105 (2500 CHU) is a conventional grain corn hybrid. A5105 is a medium-tall plant featuring consistent ear size and plant stature. This hybrid produces flinty kernels with a white cob and features very strong late-season plant intactness. A5105 offers outstanding performance consistency year after year.
A5222 (2550 CHU) is a conventional version of A5225G2 offering highly consistent grain yield. A medium-statured plant, A5222 features strong agronomics. Its rapid emergence and strong spring vigour allow for early planting. The hybrid produces uniform blocky ears. Its open-flared husks offer enhanced drydown.
A5404G2RIB (2625 CHU) is a full-season grain hybrid introduction that features above-ground insect trait protection. This hybrid features medium plant height with sturdy stalks and stout, blocky ear size and girth. A5404G2RIB has shown very stable performance with top-end yield potential. Its early flowering for maturity rating allows for rapid grain setup.
Thunder Seed
TH6180 VT2P (2300 CHU) is an excellent silage and grazing hybrid with corn borer protection. It achieved excellent results in provincial trials. The hybrid offers good quality, yield and digestibility across a wide range of environments. In addition, it offers solid agronomics and nice flint/dent kernels that allow for slower drydown. This silage variety will fit well across Western Canada.
TH6183 VT2P (2450 CHU) is an outstanding silage hybrid with impressive height and plant stature. Big flex ears have good tolerance to higher populations. Featuring good stay-green and average drydown, this hybrid widens the chopping window. TH6183 VT2P has a good fit across Western Canada and performed very well in provincial trials.
TH6182 VT2P (2400 CHU) is an elite hybrid grain corn with excellent yield and drought stress tolerance. This hybrid features a quick start in the spring with great emergence and vigour. TH6182 VT2P offers very good Goss’s wilt tolerance, good stay-green and good drydown in the fall. This hybrid has a nice fit in eastern Manitoba.
TH6185 VT2P (2550 CHU) is a strong-yielding grain corn that is very stable in tough environments due to its great drought tolerance. A medium-tall plant with girthy ears, some flex and good kernel depth, TH6185 VT2P performed extremely well in all 2020 trials. This hybrid is a full 85-day relative maturity. This grain corn suits southeastern Manitoba. Use caution based on maturity.
