SAO PAULO, Dec 4 (Reuters) - AgRural, a Brazilian agribusiness consultancy, on Friday cut for the third consecutive time its estimate for Brazilian production of corn in the summer, citing dry weather in the nation's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul.
AgRural now projects summer corn production in center-south fields to be an estimated 19.4 million tonnes for the 2020/2021 cycle, down from 20.7 million tonnes forecast last month and roughly in line with last season's 19.7 million tonnes, when dry conditions in Rio Grande do Sul farms also slashed yields and output.
"Last week's good rains were too late for areas planted with corn in the end of August and beginning of September," AgRural said.
The consultancy said it expects average yields to be 110.1 60-kilo bags per hectare because of the drought. If confirmed, it would be the lowest level since the 2014/2015 cycle.
Center-south farmers planted an area estimated at 2.94 million hectares (7.2 million acres) this year, 1% wider than in the 2019/2020 cycle, AgRural said.
Summer corn will account for about 20% of Brazil's entire corn production, as most of the country's output will come from the second, or winter corn crop. The second corn will be planted after soybeans are harvested early next year.
According to the government, Brazil will collect a total of 105.891 million tonnes of corn in the 2020/2021 cycle.
