For some operators, the winter season that is approaching is "looking bleak, especially when it comes to tomatoes, as ToBRFV is spreading very quickly," reports Vittorio Gona, president of Cooperativa Alba Bio OP located in Marina di Ragusa (RG).

ToBRFV and New Delhi
"The official sighting of the virus in Sicily dates back to January 2019 and, since then, it has spread with incredible speed especially in the Ragusa and Syracuse provinces. The consequences of the virus inside greenhouses are very worrying: a tomato plant presenting symptoms compatible with the disease in question can infect up to 90% of crops in just a few months. But there is more, as we have registered New Delhi attacks on zucchini plants, which are causing considerable losses for open-field producers."
Markets and competition
"Except for tomatoes, new greenhouse productions are looking good, but the danger is always around the corner. I am referring to our clients purchasing produce from Spain and Morocco. What is more, we were not affected by the lack of produce last year, while now we do not have the quantities required and prices are higher. In October, Alba Bio lost 40% of volumes. This is why we have decided to expand the crops next year."
Sector distortions
"It is difficult to coexist with dishonest practices in agriculture. Market distortions caused by certain operators cost supplier companies 24.2% of their turnover. It is unacceptable! Then we must also consider the many companies that are entirely unknown to the tax authorities and the INPS, which also has an effect on prices and generates unfair competition. What is more, those companies that do abide by the rules often suffer retaliation from their own employees who contact the unions about anything. While respect for all is sacrosanct, it seems the Italian society and its institutions are only 'sensitive' about one side."
"I would like to take this opportunity to announce my resignation as president of OP Alba Bio, effective as of November 1st."
