Northeast Missouri farmers preparing to pull corn in coming days - WGEM

Northeast Missouri farmers said with Fall harvest just around the corner rain could be good and bad as their crops get closer to being ready to pull out of the fields.

"We figure we're probably about 10 days away from starting corn harvest, beans are propbably about a month away," said Marion County farmer Mark Goldinger.

He said that means he's been busy checking all his equipment and getting it prepared to harvest what he's calling a decent yield for the year.

"We've been doing a lot of equipment preparation, going through trucks, tractors, combines, grain cart, trying to make sure things are ready for when the time comes to be ready to go," said Goldinger.

Marion County Farm Bureau President Joe Kendrick said their region has fared better than some of other parts of the Midwest.

He said right now, a little rain is good for the beans still in the fields.

"The dry weather, we aborted some pods in the last 10, 15 days here before we got a little shower rain probably won't help them much, but at least it'll save those pods that are still there and possibly help them out," said Kendrick.

But too much rain could make it hard to get combines going on corn in the coming days.

As far as the markets go he said with the new trade deal in place, things are getting better.

"China is buying a little bit of corn as well, so overall, things are kinda on the upside on the upside for the markets in general," said Kendrick.

Something Goldinger said he's glad for even if it isn't ideal.

"China has been back in buying some things, that's helped out with the bean prices quite a bit. Corn has come up as well, kind of been drug up with the beans," said Goldinger, "prices aren't great, but they're better than they were just a couple weeks ago."

Kendrick said in the coming weeks there will be more farm equipment on roads.

He said it's important to be cautions and give farmers space when needed.
