The tomato is one of Honduras' most profitable vegetable crops, as tomato exports to El Salvador can amount to up to $ 200,000 a day when the price of a box stands at around $ 25, according to producers from the central zone of the country.
The leading tomato producing departments in Honduras are El Paraiso, Comayagua, Francisco Morazan, Choluteca, Olancho, Copan, and Ocotepeque. One of the farmers, Edy Maradiaga, said that even though tomato prices had fallen to $ 10 per box today, it was still a profitable crop that generated more than 15,000 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs nationwide.
The tomato in Honduras is part of the vegetable chain and its production and export represent an important commercial exchange in Central America, in addition to satisfying internal demand. According to experts, local consumers prefer pear and apple tomatoes.
This year's goal is to harvest more than 85 million pounds and achieve exports for more than 5.1 million dollars.
