A farmer from Boissevain was trying out a new variety of sweet corn this year and decided to give away thousands of cobs of corn.

Ian Froese of Froese Family Farms wanted to try the corn and he bought a bag to put into his corn field.FROESE CORN 3

“The original plan was I was either going to sell it or put up a tip jar and have someone pick it and sell it but when COVID hit I kind of figured 2020 was probably going to be a crummy year so I thought it might be nice for people have some sweet corn near town.”

Froese says there were nine rows of corn and he estimates there were 18,000 cobs of corn.

“Pretty much anytime we drove by it looked like someone was out there picking corn so, it sure seems like a lot of people took advantage of it so that’s good. A few people talked to me and they really enjoyed the corn and that’s all you can ask.”

Froese was a little apprehensive because he wasn’t sure what the corn would taste like.

Looking ahead he doesn’t think he’ll plant as many rows but he thinks there could be a few rows for people to come out and pick in 2021, but that has yet to be decided.
