For many, fall flavors mean apple cinnamon and pumpkin spice, but in Upstate New York’s Finger Lakes, mid-September through mid-October is grape pie season.
The Grape Pie Capital of the World located in Naples, NY is also home to the Naples Grape Festival. While it is canceled for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event plans to return in 2021. The fair features food, wine, arts, music, and what else, the World’s Greatest Grape Pie Contest.
This sweet jammy pastry can be filled with deep purple Concord or Catawba grapes and can be paired with one of the regions many dessert wines. While we wait for next year’s grape festival to return, order one of these fall confections from a local bakery.
Monica’s Pies
Monica’s Pies is open year-round and offers grape pie every day. Monica has been baking grape pies in the Finger Lakes for over 30 years and her motto is: “Pie fixes everything!” You can order grape pies with a pastry or crumb topping, grape tarts, grape bread and even a grape pie kit to gift. The rest of the menu contains a plethora of sweet and savory pies for every taste.

Heart 'N Hand
Recently reopened after the pandemic, Heart 'n Hand sells a variety of pies from sweet to savory and offers grape pies seasonally. They use locally grown Concord grapes and say they are best enjoyed with streusel topping and a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. Call ahead to secure one of these popular pies. The bakery also sells homemade breads, biscotti, cupcakes, cookies, muffins, brownies, ice cream, retro candies and more.

Jeni’s Pies
Jeni Makepeace is a three-time winner of the Naples Grape Festival’s World’s Greatest Grape Pie Contest who started as a home baker, selling pies from her aunt’s front lawn. Now she sells thousands of pie annually and while the Grape Fest is postponed for this year, you can still get one of her delicious double crust or streusel topping grape pies at Joseph’s Wayside Market. They also carry Jeni’s grape monkey bread on the weekends.

Cindy’s Grape Pies
Cindy’s Grape Pies bakes up grape pies, grape tarts, grape bread, grape coffee cake and grape-filled cookies in the fall. For 2020, their seasonal offering is a Heavenly Red grape pie. Baked with heritage Agawam red grapes, Cindy’s describes it with notes of apple and cherry, unlike a traditional Concord grape pie. You can also try their grape desserts at local places like Caruso’s Cafe in Naples and Casa Larga Winery in Fairport, NY.

Arbor Hill Grapery & Winery

For 2020, Mortalis Brewing in a collaboration with Cindy’s Grape Pies and Other Half Brewing FLX is presenting a grape pie beer called “Tears of the Goddess I Have Fillings Too." This limited edition beer will be available at the Mortalis taproom, located at 5660 Tec Drive in Avon, NY.
Want to pick grapes yourself? While in Naples, stop to Jerome’s U-Pick Farm to hand select bunches of beautiful Finger Lakes grapes. Located at 8936 NY Rt. 53, they grow several varieties which are available for picking throughout the season which runs from Sept. to October. Bring your own shears and they will supply the containers and wagons. Baskets of grapes can also be purchased at their retail stand. Grape season hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
