The Almeria-based companies CASI, Criado y López S.L. (CyL) and KIMITEC are working in partnership with the University of Almería and Fundación Cajamar on the S3 project. With it, they seek to provide tomato producers with the necessary tools to grow a product that stands out from the rest thanks to its health properties and organoleptic characteristics, as well as for the sustainability of the cultivation system. In short, these tomatoes should be unique, supplied with a nutritional label and be marketed with a zero waste strategy.
CASI, leader of the consortium, intends to carry out a series of actions to improve the quality, safety, competitiveness, productivity and sustainability through varietal selection, bio-nutrition and bioprotection. For its part, KIMITEC will design, develop and manufacture a specific solution for tomato cultivation (selected varieties) capable of nourishing and protecting the crop without leaving any chemical traces and enhancing its organoleptic properties. Lastly, CYL will develop a new double action anti-insect mesh to prevent the entry of insects, but which will improve the air flow inside the greenhouse.
With the integrated work of the three companies and their technological developments, it will be possible for Almería to grow a tastier, healthier and more sustainable tomato (S3) that allows for differentiation and competitive improvement in the current market.
